Modern fandom went awry when people stopped learning how to avoid content that upsets them and instead starting actively seeking it out.

I mean this in the kindest, most loving way possible, but babes you'll be so much happy when you stop focusing on what other people are doing and instead focus on what you like.

You'll never be able to stop people from liking what you hate, and the best way you'll find any peace of mind is properly utilizing blocking, blacklisting, and muting tools. Take it from someone who used to run a shipping discourse blog, fandom is supposed to be what you enjoy, stop focusing on things that upset you.

Once you become a certain age, it is your responsibility to unlearn behaviors that hinder your growth as a person.

Man I cannot stress this enough. The “this is how I am, take it or leave it” attitude is an act of immaturity. We all have toxic traits that we need to work on and as an adult it’s our responsibility to recognize the damage that they can do to the ones we love. We all need to put in more effort in becoming better individuals.

Minors: AO3 is disgusting.

Adults: Okay, then don’t read properly tagged explicit or dark fics. Or perhaps don’t lie to the website that you are 18 or over and are mature enough to view that content when you’re clearly not.

Minor: Nah, AO3 is disgusting and needs to go.

I wish kids nowadays would just take some goddamn responsibility for themselves instead of just shrieking the classic “I’m baby, everyone cater to me and my dewicate sensibiwities! uwu”

When I was 14-15, I’d lie about my age and read adult fics. Yeah, we all did it. The difference is that if there was something I didn’t like, I’d just hit the back button and find one that DID fit my tastes.

I didn’t attack the author. I didn’t scream for the site to be sanitized, or cleansed of content that I shouldn’t have been viewing in the first place. Because that is what an irresponsible, entitled cunt does.

Don’t be an irresponsible, entitled cunt. Because you kids are going to feel really, really fucking stupid if we lose Ao3 and when you get to be my age, there isn’t anywhere safe for you to go to read the fics you actually DO enjoy, because sniveling children who acted just like you did threw a little bitch fit and got all of the safe spaces for adults taken away.

No one wants to use Wattpad anymore because they delete fics just for being reported without even investigating the content contained therein. Fanfiction.net sucks now because porn isn’t allowed and abuse and harassment reports go unanswered for YEARS. And antis who pretend to hate Ao3 STILL post there because they’re hungry for views/comments/kudos, which they know they can’t get anywhere else.

What these antis and bitchy kids want is to feel like they no longer have to compete with creators who make content they don’t like.

The majority are butthurt over the numbers of their uwu wholesome fic being smaller than that of a story containing a ship they hate or kink they’re squicked by.

They take their disgust of something and pretend that disgust is actually ‘moral righteous anger’, and use that to fuel their little hate crusades, which come in the form of bullying, doxxing, and suicide baiting. And they really don’t like that Ao3 doesn’t put up with it. If they comment on a fic with hate, they get reported and lose their privilege to use the site, while Fanfiction.net lets it go.

Guys, Ao3 is something we have to defend with everything we got. The demand for censorship is getting worse, but you know what? The opposition may be loud, but they are SO very outnumbered. And when we stand together, we can be louder.

Ao3 was founded by the people they hate. The freaks, weirdos, kinksters, shippers, and queers which they have tried so hard to drive into a corner and shun from society.

And for so many of us, Ao3 is that corner, and now they want to push us out of it and take it for themselves.

We aren’t going to let them. Ao3 is OURS. Our safe space. The safe space we need to ensure is there for our kids and generations after.

So donate if you can. Volunteer if you can. Leave kudos and comments to encourage your favorite authors.

And if you are a kid that isn’t supposed to be there, just hit the back button like I did.
